Tawana M. Coates, MD, MPH

Dr. Tawana Coates MD, MPH is excited to join our practice and serve all women of the Kentuckiana area. She was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. She knew very early on that she was interested in women's healthcare, especially during her time as a certified nursing assistant. While in college, she majored in mathematics and biology with a minor in chemistry. She graduated from college as the valedictorian of her class, summa cum laude, and received All University Honors from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas. Following college, she was immediately accepted into the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she completed a 5-year degree program and graduated with her Medical Degree and Master of Public Health. With her passion in public health and women's healthcare, Dr. Coates has led many research projects and community outreach projects that focus on teen pregnancy, access to contraception care, family planning, reducing infant mortality in high-risk populations, the impact of maternal mortality on disadvantaged populations, and much more. Dr. Coates has received recognition and multiple awards for her leadership in these fields, including: Excellence in Public Health Award from the United States Public Health Service Physician Advisory Committee, University of Kansas School of Medicine Excellence in Public Health Award, and the University of Kansas Russel F. Holcomb, MD Memorial Award for Outstanding Performance in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Coates was excited to continue her training in Louisville, where she completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Louisville. During her residency training, she has served as the community health outreach chair and as the resident physician chair for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG). Additionally, she has received the following recognitions: University of Louisville Dept. of OBGYN - Outstanding Achievement in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Outstanding Resident and Achievement in Family Planning, University of Louisville Dept. of OBGYN Perlman Award for Excellence in Ambulatory Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the University of Louisville House Staff Outstanding Achievement in Community Engagement Award. Dr. Coates continues to serve the community as a member of the Coalition for Black Maternal Health, and she serves as this regions District Chair for ACOG, where she advocates for all members of the community, including women of diverse backgrounds and the LGBTQ community.

In November 2023, she became a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and also a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists.

During residency, Dr. Coates had the pleasure of being trained by the physicians in our practice and she knew very early that she wanted to serve the community alongside them. Dr. Coates and her family fell in love with the Kentuckiana area, where she resides with her husband and daughter. During her free time, she can be found cheering her daughter on in gymnastics, enjoying date nights with her high-school sweetheart, traveling to explore new places, and spending time with her friends. She is looking forward to serving the Kentuckiana community.
